The number one reason people drink functional coffee is that they want to enhance their health and wellness without necessarily having to dramatically change their daily routines and rituals. And since the main ingredient in a functional coffee is the coffee itself, it stands to reason that a quality functional coffee company should expend a tremendous amount of care when choosing the coffee they use in their products. IF they truly care about their customers, that is.

So when I started Astro Botanico in 2022, I insisted that the coffee I used had to be organic, it had to be shade-grown, it had to be certified Fair Trade or Direct Trade, and it had to be real coffee...not instant or an extract (which is vastly inferior in terms of taste and enhancing health, compared to fresh-brewed).

Because here’s the thing...fresh-brewed, shade-grown, organic coffee is actually an extremely healthy beverage, and one of the most biochemically rich foods on earth, loaded with over a thousand natural compounds, the vast majority of which are linked to longer, healthier lifespans and decreased disease risk...especially when consumed with intention rather than used as a crutch to prop up an unhealthy lifestyle consumed by “hustle culture”.

The coffee beans in our botanical blends are grown by indigenous Maya Indian farmers in the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, as well as various other small, family-owned, organic farms throughout Central and South America. They’re purchased through co-ops like SOPPEXCCA and AMUCC, among others, which support Direct Trade programs. This allows these farmers to receive a premium for their crops while continuing to practice sustainable, biodynamic, and regenerative organic farming methods.

Which sounds cool and all...

...but really, it’s just a fancy way of saying that every time you buy our coffee, you’re helping really good people do really good things, like:

funding interest-free revolving credit lines to help farmers meet short-term cash flow needs & upgrade farm equipment
building schools and educational programs so that children in farming communities can get an education rather than spending their days working as unpaid labor on family farms to help make ends meet
helping to improve economic diversity & sustainability in coffee-growing communities by teaching skills that create alternative streams of revenue such as beekeeping, farmers markets, & backyard gardens
developing sustainable food programs to keep families and children in farming communities well-fed and nurtured year-round, especially through "los meses flacos"..."the thin months"
empowering women-owned organic farms to become profitable enterprises in countries experiencing social, cultural, & political upheavals
protecting the cultivation of coffee in lush mountainous jungles & nature reserves that are refuges for wild animals & plants
supporting the preservation of indigenous knowledge, as well as the conservation of natural resources and mutually beneficial relationships between native plants and crops.

And that's just a small taste of what it means to buy our beans.

We strive for every single ingredient in every one of our products to be - at a bare minimum - organically grown and Fair Trade Certified, whenever possible. Additionally, all of our medicinal mushrooms are 100% organically grown fruiting body extracts ONLY...no cheap, inferior grown-on-grain mycelium (which includes those labeled “full-spectrum” mushrooms), or fillers - ever. In short, we understand that the strength of the supply chain is only as healthy as its weakest link - which is why Astro Botanico is committed to sourcing all of our ingredients, product packaging, shipping materials, and labeling with exceptionally high standards in order to benefit the health of the farmers, their families, & the communities they live in, as well as the health of the plant, the health of the planet, & ultimately, the health of you.
